Melbourne Queer Games Festival 2019 is happening this October
Queer games are a special treasure to us here at Gayming Magazine, so we’re delighted to hear the Melbourne Queer Games Festival 2019 is officially opening this October. Places like this are not only a safe space for those in the LGBT community, but a place where queer games can be celebrated in the way they deserve.
According to the official website of this event, the Melbourne Queer Games Festival (MQGF) is a relaxed, lofi, downloadable event that is run on the 8th of October 2019 by a small team of volunteers who love queer games.
It includes a livestream, website, game bundle and awards programme. Our focus is not on queer gamers or queer developers but rather on the tiny and underappreciated genre of queer games itself.
This year’s theme is “shine a light” because we want to give games made in the last 18 months some time in the spotlight.
What makes MQGF so exciting is how it is open to all developers of LGBTQ+ games around the world. Even if you can’t make the event, you’ll be able to show off your game through using a livestream, making the event more accessible than ever.
There is also no limit on what games you can submit. MQGF states that “big games, small games, fun games, serious games, trash games. We want them all.”
But of course, what counts as a queer video game? According to the MQGF guidelines, “a queer game has some combination of queer characters, queer visuals, queer worldview, queer gameplay or queer experiences at its core.” If that sounds like the game you’re in the process of developing, then why not give it a go and submit?
