Remember when Danity Kane existed as a comic book hero?
She’s in the car. She rides slow. She’s an intergalactic hero trying to save her race with the power of her voice. Does anyone remember when Danity Kane existed in comic book form, right after P. Diddy unjustly dismantled the girl group?
Danity Kane has a huge LGBT following and performs at every Pride event and gay club they’re booked at. You may remember the five-piece – now a three-piece – for their top ten hits “Showstopper” and “Damaged” – as well as for being the first and only girl group to have their first two albums debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200.
Although the core members have narrowed down to Aubrey O’Day, Dawn Richard and Shannon Bex, Danity Kane is still alive and well, with fans anxiously awaiting a follow-up to last year’s “Neon Lights.”
In 2009, Richard announced a three-issue comic book series titled Danity Kane. Back when the girl group was forming in 2006, the “Save Me from You” singer showed her bandmates a drawing of a young woman with an alter ego. They loved the concept of Danity Kane so much that they decided to use it as the band’s name. Created by Richard – who also provided rough sketches – written by Natasha McGough and illustrated by Kim Ji Min, the limited series went into publication via Eigomagna.
Drawn in classic Japanese style art, Danity Kane told the story of a naive but super-strong youth sent from her home planet to rescue her people from their oppressors. Armed with the power to control people with her voice, Danity Kane is the key to liberating her race and saving the people of Earth from the resulting conflict. Just picture an alien version of DC’s Black Canary.
Richard spoke on the story more to MTV by saying, “there’s this villain who owns a record label as a front — hint, hint, hint, hint — and he wants to take over Earth, and they kidnap her and take her over to Earth. She joins the record label not knowing what the record label is and becomes huge. Thus, the triangle of who’s honest, who’s not. She fights evil to protect us.”
The three issues of Danity Kane are out of print over at Eigomagna, but used editions can be purchased on Amazon and eBay. What better way to celebrate the comic’s ten year anniversary than by grabbing your copy?
This week, Aubrey O’Day and Dawn Richard took a break from Danity Kane (the band) and debuted as a duo, Aubrey x Dawn. They released two singles, “Fly” and “Boy Down,” which cracked the Top 8 on iTunes Dance
