The cutest — and most horror-worthy — Pokémon to add to your team

It’s that time of year again, and as we prepare for all the horror that the Halloween season has in store, it’s time to make sure you have a Pokémon team to match!

This historic franchise has it’s fair share of absolutely terrifying pocket monsters. From the possessed dolls of lost children to literal gods of otherworldly nightmares, Pokémon has always enjoyed creating some of the most unsettling creatures imaginable.

But while there may be many scary pokémon, how many of these pair their outright terror with the utmost cuteness? How many can lull potential victims before unleashing their unique movesets of ghoulish retribution?

Only the best predators of Pokémon’s gigantic pokédex manage to hide their villainy behind a lovable appearance. And it’s time that we look at some of these today, to help you figure out the cutest — and absolute deadliest — pokémon for your team this Halloween.

Mawile

Our list begins with a creature who knows how adorable you’ll think it is — in fact, its counting on it. Because, from the front, Mawile is your prototypical adorable pokémon; with big eyes, ever-present smile, and humanoid form, it appears like many of the slightly fantastical but largely harmless monsters that the series is known for. The creature’s pokédex entries emphasize that Mawile does all it can to appear docile…before introducing trainers to the gigantic maw on the back of its head.

A yawning mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth takes the place of where most trainers would expect Mawile’s hair to be. This pokémon has perfected the tactic of assuaging people’s fears with its timid appearance before feasting on them, with in-universe research finding that Mawiles are viciously voracious when it comes to feeding the monster on the back of their head.

Sliggoo

Some pokémon look like absolute dorks, and that’s a compliment; many appear adorably unaware of the exciting world around them and the immense power they wield. For no pocket monster is that more true than with Sliggoo, a snail-like creature that has unfortunately lost its sight with evolution. Because of this it relies on a natural radar system to determine who are friends and who are predators…a system that has a lethal tendency to be wrong.

Because when Sliggoo believes it is in danger it will secrete a toxic mucus that can dissolve any known thing in the pokémon world. Unfortunately, though, this pokémon has a hard time telling its surroundings — meaning it has been known to melt and consume friends thinking they’re potential predators. This really isn’t Sliggoos fault, as evolution robbed it of the chance to truly know who means it harm. But despite this, the pokédex make it clear that this pokémon has a tendency to turn those closest to it into a soupy meal.

And all while wearing that dorky, adorable grin.

Froslass

There are few apex pokémon predators as beautiful as Froslass, the Ice-Ghost type who loves nothing more than to turn humans into icy decorations.

Modeled after a ghostly woman, its appearance is where Froslass’ beauty ends, with the creature making a game of freezing lost mountain climbers and bringing it back to its lair. Their frozen corpses serve as morbid decorations, testaments to those who lost their lives trying to scale Pokémon’s highest peaks.

And that’s when Froslass decides to stay near its frosty home! Because in-game legends also speak of the pokémon descending, haunting villages and knocking on doors, with whoever answers being sentenced to an eternally cold afterlife as the creature’s furniture. This sets it apart from other terrifying pokémon because many of those commit atrocities based on misplaced fear or instinct — but for Froslass, it’s the love of the hunt that drives its chilly horrors.

Gourgeist

Halloween isn’t complete without jack-o-lanterns! And luckily for pokémon lovers everywhere, there’s a pocket monster literally built around this festive decoration in Gourgeist…now, if only it wasn’t so deadly.

Because despite this creature’s darling appearance as a smiling face on top of a carved pumpkin, the pokémon universe has come to dread Gourgeist and its ghoulish songs. Pokédex entries explain that they stroll around towns, singing death knells and searching for a listener to drag into the afterlife. Research shows that the pokémon has many favorite ways of doing this; sometimes it magicks people away using music, sometimes it strangles them with its hair, sometimes it curses people to years of suffering.

There are many methods by which this creature sentences its prey to eternal damnation. But no matter how it does it, just know: if you hear a Gourgeist’s song late at night, all you can do is run and hope it didn’t catch you listening.

Hatterene

How can you not say diva? Hatterene is a glamorous fusion of technicolor and sickening accessory, with this pokémon offering a tie-dye version of this universe’s witchiest dreams. And while overwhelmingly powerful, it isn’t as prone to attacking trainers as some of the other members of this list — as long as you stay out of its forest.

Hatterenes take up residence in empty woods because they are painfully attuned to the emotions of others, feeling every moment of sadness, pain, and other negativity that this world’s trainers go through. Because of this, many retreat into nature-filled solitude, attacking any being they can sense within a 30-mile radius. This deadly defense mechanism singles out Hatterenes as not only one of the most lethal pokémon, but one of the most haunting. Because so many trainers are surely bewitched by the stories of this ‘forest witch’ with its gorgeous appearance and endlessly iconic energy. It’s so enthralling, that most people won’t realize Hatterene is tearing their mind apart psychically until it’s far too late.

Litwick

While some pokémon have complex designs, sometimes this studio succeeds just by slapping some features onto a random shape. Just look at Litwick! This delightful candle pokémon is literally just a mischievous face on a melting candle. It bewitches any trainer who loves nothing more than a cute little creature, with their affection — and literal life force — keeping this pocket monster well fed.

Yes, Litwick uses its candle as a lure to drain the literal life energy of anything around it. It’s in the creature’s DNA; its candle only burns if it’s feeding off of the people and pokémon around it. That makes it necessary that it drains the life force of things around it…except Litwick actually doesn’t need it’s candle to be on to stay alive. And not only that, but it seems to enjoy stealing the life force of young children especially, with their energy making its flame grow brighter than usual.

This makes it clear that literally leeching away the life of others comes easy to Litwick. Not because it has to do so to survive, but because for this Ghost type pokémon, nothing gets it livelier than pushing those around it just a little bit closer to death.
