The Golden Girls Take Manhattan fan-game is no more
The Golden Girls Take Manhattan was an ambitious project from developers Joey Pagano and Chris Lindgren, one that was set to release during the 2023 winter holiday season. However, that’s no longer the case.
The fan-game — which was heavily inspired by Atlus’ Persona 5 — was eagerly anticipated by not just gamers, but fans of the 1985 show. The show followed the lives of 4 older women living together in Miami, with Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, Betty White as Rose Nylund, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo, Dorothy’s mother.
Not only was the show a resounding success back when it first aired, but it continues to be one of the most important shows for both the girlies, the gays, and allies thanks to its often (bar a few episodes) surprisingly progressive stories and characters.
So it goes without saying there was genuine excitement for a The Golden Girls game, especially with a Persona-esque twist.
Unfortunately that’s no longer the case, but for a very good reason, as shared by the game’s Twitter account.
“Hey All: Bad News and Good News: We unfortunately need to cancel the game. The scope of it is significantly larger than what we’re equipped to handle.” The official The Golden Girls Take Manhattan Twitter account shared. “There are a number of reasons for it but the biggest reason is that we are simply not in a position to be able to dedicate time to it.”
The developers have stated that they may make a playable build at a later date to refine the work they have done, but that it will be more like a “sandbox” rather than the original experience they were going for.
The account concluded: “To everyone who believed in us, thank you. Like honestly thank you so much. I still don’t think it would have gotten this far without support, and even though we aren’t really able to finish it, I think all of us have at least have learned a lot making this game.”
Considering the game was a parody and totally free, it’s a bummer that it won’t come to fruition but also? Entirely understandable why.
Fret not The Golden Girls fans. As Dorothy once said, “the bottom line is, in life, sometimes good things happen, sometimes bad things happen.” That’s just how it is.
