Former Call of Duty champion issues apology for using homophobic slur on stream

During a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 stream on October 16, former two-time Call of Duty champion and current captain of the Boston Breach Call of Duty League academy team, Doug “Censor” Martin, had a “heated gamer moment,” berating a teammate and ultimately calling them the f slur.

“I don’t respect you period you suck dick at the game bitch fuck off p****,” Censor said in a clip of the stream his target, an aspiring Call of Duty pro who goes by Kodo, shared on Twitter. “Unfollow me on social media too you little fucking f*****.”

A few hours after the stream and the posted clip, Censor posted a video on Twitter addressing the situation and apologizing for what he said.

“I have to be honest with myself and say this now. If I was to wait, this wouldn’t feel right. If you understand I appreciate you, but if you don’t I understand too. Either way, I know this is the only way I want to move forward,” Censor wrote in the accompanying tweet.

“I slipped up and I said a word I shouldn’t have said,” Censor said in the video. “I let someone get under my skin and I said the F-word. I’m not proud about it. I’m not happy about it. I’m definitely disappointed in myself about it because regardless of what anyone is gonna think it’s absolutely not something I stand for or something I say in my private life ever. And I did say it, right here in my public life and I slipped up and I know it. And I cringed when I did it, because I knew it was wrong and I know it’s not something I stand for and yet, I did it anyway.”

“So I’m really disappointed in myself and almost equally, but not to the same extent, I’m upset because people are gonna see this thing and they’re gonna think that they could do this too because I did it, and that’s not okay, it’s not right, it’s just wrong,” he said. “If you feel some type of way about it I am sorry because it’s the truth. And there’s nothing more I can honestly do than tell you guys the truth. I have to hold myself accountable; the only thing I can do is apologize, the only thing I can do is tell you guys the honest truth and it’s up to you guys to interpret it however you want to. But all I know for sure is if I got to sleep tonight without saying anything, I’m not gonna sleep well because I just know that I messed up and I know that I’m wrong.”

Censor hasn’t had any real scandals or controversies before this during his Call of Duty career. Him making and leaving this video up, despite the toxicity that’s still rampant in the CoD community hopefully indicates the apology and commitment to doing better in the future from Censor are sincere.
