Can you be gay in Goodbye Volcano High?

After a fairly troubled development period, KO_OP’s new apocalyptic high school visual novel, Goodbye Volcano High, is finally out now for PC and PlayStation 4/5. In this game, we play as an anthropomorphic pterodactyl named Fang who is entering their senior year of high school. Just as they’re going back to school and getting to practice with their band, Worm Drama, news of an asteroid heading towards the planet breaks.

For the rest of the game, Fang and their friends and family have to live with this threat hanging over their heads, which, of course, leads to some pretty big revelations and confrontations. But as always, the question remains, can you be gay?

Can you be gay in Goodbye Volcano High?

The answer to this question is a little complicated, as it depends on your choices as Fang and also involves a pretty major spoiler, SO BE WARNED!!!

Fang is an AFAB nonbinary person who uses they/them pronouns (we get this info through tidbits of dialogue in the game), and they never explicitly state their sexual orientation. That said, they do get a message from a secret admirer once the asteroid news hits. Fang talks with this person throughout the rest of Goodbye Volcano High until they ultimately reveal themselves to be none other than yearbook committee chair Naomi during the story’s climax.

There’s a lot of drama in between this reveal and the pair’s chance to talk things out, but eventually it does happen. You get to choose if you want Fang to be with Naomi romantically, or just stay friends. If you decide to be with them romantically, you can go on a very cute date with them a little later.

It’s also important to note that this person is the only romantic option available for Fang that we’ve encountered so far. Since their interactions are a pretty big part of the story itself, it seems unlikely that there are other options, but we will update this guide if we find any.

There are also queer side characters, as both of Fang’s best friends, Trish and Reed, are shown in LGBTQ+ relationships during the game as well.
