Hugh Grant confirms his Glass Onion character is Benoit Blanc’s husband
In an interview with Collider, Hugh Grant confirmed that his cameo character in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion, Phillip, is, in fact, married to Daniel Craig’s character, the illustrious detective Benoit Blanc. Light spoilers for the film follow, so be warned if you haven’t checked it out yet.
Though Glass Onion largely takes place on a doofus billionaire’s private island somewhere near Greece, we do get a few insights into Blanc’s life beforehand leading up to this new investigation. We get a fantastic scene of the detective wallowing in his bath tub while playing Among Us with Natasha Leone, Angela Lansberry, and Steven Sondheim during the pandemic lockdown. Though the scene could simply be a fun way to set up the timeframe of the film and what’s been going on with Blanc’s investigative life, it also leads into the setup for this whole adventure.
Janelle Monae’s character, Helen, knocks on the door of Blanc’s apartment in search of the detective, but it’s actually Grant’s Phillip who answers. The rom-com icon looks absolutely domestic, in a messy apron splotched with flour and holding what looks like a sourdough starter. The film makes it clear that the two live together, as Phillip yells at Blanc for being “in the bath again” when Helen asks for him, indicating that it’s a habit Grant’s character is all too familiar with.
Grant confirmed it himself when speaking to Collider. “It is true, I’m married to James Bond,” he told the outlet. Apparently he was hesitant to elaborate further though, as his co-interviewee Chris Pine hadn’t seen the film yet. Still, it’s there in black and white that Phillip and Blanc are indeed a married couple.
This isn’t the only confirmation that Benoit is a queer man, however. Knives Out and Glass Onion director Rian Johnson confirmed this as well during a press conference at the London Film Festival where he was asked about the scene with Phillip and if it meant Blanc was a queer man.
“Yes, he obviously is,” Johnson said. “And there’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.”
