Ring Fit Adventure will give you a kick up the ring

After the success of Wii Fit, it was inevitable that Nintendo would follow up with another fitness game to get us sweating and toning, this time called the Ring Fit Adventure. But I didn’t expect there to be such a robust adventure mode along with it.

In true Nintendo fashion, you’re sent on a quest to beat a bodybuilding dragon (because of course), where you’ll find yourself running, squatting and yoga-posing across a beautifully rendered, colourful world.

And it’s quite the workout too. One joycon is attached to your inner thigh to track movement (steady on) and the other sits in the ring, grasped with both hands.

From here, running on the spot moves your character down a predetermined path. Squeezing the ring blows out air (stay with me…), while pulling it out sucks in collectibles. Twisting your body from side-to-side allows you to aim your blows, and you can even jump by aiming your ring downwards, propelling you into the air.

Eventually you’ll come across a battle, which takes place in turn-based style. Who knew RPGs could be so physically taxing? You have a number of moves at your disposal, from squatting to yoga poses, which are colour coded – match this with the colour of the enemy to deal maximum damage. Simple yet effective.

On top of the adventure mode are shorter mini games focused on specific areas of the body, from pottery (here hilariously called Squattery) to balancing on a tightrope, and squeezing the ring to collect coins while shuffling up the side of a building. They’re all as inventive as you’d expect from a Nintendo product.

Even after a few minutes you’ll start to feel the burn. You can calibrate the ring for your own strength, ensuring you won’t hurt yourself, and playing just half an hour a day of the adventure mode should keep you going for around three months.

Yet again, Nintendo have done the impossible and managed to make exercise fun. Just keep a towel close by – after a few minutes of beating bad guys, you’ll have quite the sweaty ring!
