Animated series Dragon Age: Absolution coming to Netflix in December
On Thursday, Netflix announced that a new animated series set in the Dragon Age universe called Dragon Age: Absolution will debut on the streaming service in December. Mairghread Scott is the showrunner on this project and is also working on Netflix’s upcoming Magic: The Gathering show.
During the final day of Netflix Geeked Week, the streaming service aired a teaser trailer for the new show. As with other animated Netflix shows like The Dragon Prince, Dragon Age: Absolution appears to have an art style that’s a mix of 2 and 3-D animation. The trailer showed off both melee and magical combat, systems that are key to the BioWare games.
The new animated series was made in collaboration with BioWare, the game development studio behind the Dragon Age franchise. According to Netflix, the show is a standalone story that employs “an ensemble of new characters inspired by Dragon Age lore.” Though Netflix did not reveal any details about when in the timeline the show takes place, it did confirm that Absolution is set in the Tevinter Imperium – the same setting the next game, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, will use.
Though details about what all the show will entail are still sparse, we can make some assumptions based on what’s been shown and what we know about Dragon Age lore. The key art for this announcement features a close-up shot of an elf’s face covered in blood. They’re holding a shining blade that is reflecting the large city we see in the show’s teaser trailer. Given the Tevinter Imperium’s history with enslaving elves, we can make an educated guess that this character is likely a former or escaped slave – though the latter portion of the trailer also indicates this blood may be from a heist or mission already in progress. Given this setting, it’s also likely that we won’t see much in the way of Templars in this series, as Tevinter embraces magic and the Chantry doesn’t have much grip on the region.
