Thirsty Sword Lesbians wins the Nebula Award for games writing
On May 21 the winners of the 57th Annual Nebula Awards were announced, with Evil Games’ Thirsty Sword Lesbians taking the Nebula Award for Game Writing.
The Nebula Awards is an event that highlights writers of the most outstanding speculative fiction works, with this year looking at works released in 2021. The Nebula Awards have awarded many pieces of fiction outside of games, including TV series like WandaVision, and Films such as Guardians of the Galaxy by James Gunn. On the contrary, it was only in 2019 that game writing was included in the prestigious awards in the first place, with Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds taking home the award.
However, until this year, the award for games writing has been won by video games. Thirsty Sword Lesbians win marks the very first time that a tabletop role-playing game has won a Nebula Award – a momentous moment in the history of the awards.
Other nominees for the Best Game Writing award were Wildermyth, Wanderhome, Coyote & Crow, and Granma’s Hand. This was the first year that the majority of the games nominated were all TTRPGs, with Wildermyth being the exception.
Thirsty Sword Lesbians describes itself as “a roleplaying game for telling queer stories with friends. If you love angsty disaster lesbians with swords, you have come to the right place.” It contains flights of fancy, a lot of flirting with your friends and, as you may have guessed, lesbians.
In our review of the thirsty TTRPG, we said that we “appreciated how committed it is to inclusive language and its lighthearted tone because stories in Thirsty Sword Lesbians are meant to be inclusive and undeniably queer.” Overall we scored the game 3.5 and heartily recommended our readers to grab the TTRPG and give it a go ASAP.
