Women are Werewolves is a non-binary game that explores gender and family

The act of transformation is something that’s both appealing and intellectually fascinating, and in Women are Werewolves, the transformation of a human to a wolf is the perfect way to talk about gender identity, as well as the effect it has on the people you cherish and love.

Developed by indie tabletop game publisher and design house 9th Level Games, Women are Werewolves is a card-based story game where players take on the role of non-binary characters who come from a family where only women can transform into werewolves, and men stay at home. Of course, with such specific and rigid gender roles, what happens to those who don’t fit in?

“At its heart, Women are Werewolves is a game about discovering your boundaries and whether you can find, or make, a space for your authentic self within a family that might not understand you.” The Kickstarter for the game explains.

The overall story focuses on characters (all of which are non-binary, whether you yourself are or aren’t) exploring their relationship with their queer and non-queer family members, as well as engage and navigate various gendered traditions that your family is part of.

As for gameplay, players will be drawing prompt cards and answering the questions on them, with gameplay time taking up to 90 minutes with each session. All you’ll need is the imagination to create your own werewolf mythology, a group of individuals over the age of 13 to help you play the game, and the desire to traverse topics of gender and family with a little sprinkling of werewolves on top.

And if you still aren’t sure what to expect from Women are Werewolves and want to find out more: check out this video from the developers on just how to play this story-focused game in under 5 minutes.

Women are Werewolves will be available at special distributors like Indie Press Revolution, as well as for fans who have supported the project over on Kickstarter, by July 2022.
