Former BioWare Lead Writer David Gaider is forming an Australian video game studio
Depending on who you ask, David Gaider either made his mark on video games through Dragon Age or Baldur’s Gate 2. Regardless of what you think, Gaider was the lead writer of Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and was well-loved by fans for his writing and attention to lore and setting.
Since his departure from BioWare in 2016, and Beamdog in 2018, fans of Gaider have wondered where he’ll end up next.
The answer to that is in a brand new studio: Summerfall Studios. Gaider will be joined by a diverse team, including Beamdog alumni Liam Esler, who will be Summerfall’s managing director.
The news first came from Kotaku Australia, who had an exclusive talk with Gaider about the direction of Summerfall Studios, their new game, as well as the partnership of both Gaider and Esler.
One thing that was talked about was that Summerfall Studios will be based in Melbourne, Australia and that they’d be creating an “illustrated character-driven adventure” for their first game. Considering Gaider’s past credentials, you’d have to forgive us for being more than a little excited on what that could mean.
Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long as the game will be officially unveiled during Melbourne International Games Week during PAX Australia, on the Friday of the event. Those who have subscribed to Summerfall Studio’s mailing list will get a preview of the game early next week.
After a quick look at what Summerfall Studio’s website says about what to expect from them — “Summerfall Studios will crush your dreams and tear out your heart… in the very best way” — we’re eager to know what comes next.
For now, all we can do is wait…and hope for some excellent gayming to look forward to.
