Can you be gay in Lake?

Lake, the game from developer Gamious and publisher Whitethorn Digital, is officially out today and I for one am very happy and, dare I say it, gay to get stuck into this wonderful game once more.

Players will take on the role of Meredith Weiss, a middle-aged workaholic who swaps her life and job in the big city for two weeks delivering mail in her beautiful hometown of Providence Oaks. If it sounds fairly simple, then you’ll be happy to know that the game is just that, but simple is refreshing and I absolutely enjoyed my time with Lake. Maybe you will too?

Of course, one of the most asked questions I saw was whether there were options for a gay romance for Meredith during her time in Providence Oaks. After all, it was made pretty obvious in the trailers for Lake that there would be romance options, but did that mean gay ladies would be able to get their smooch on?

So, can you be gay in Lake? The answer: an overwhelming yes. Meredith can indeed kiss women – well, one woman – and that woman is Angie, the movie-loving owner of the Flick Shack. Yes, you can have a little giggle at the name. I won’t judge.

The realization that Meredith and Angie could get together immediately registered the moment she corrected your use of ‘Mrs’ to change it to ‘Miss.’ The tone of her voice, the pointed change… That gay tension is easy to miss for the straights, but for me it just made my gaydar go on the blink.

‘Yep,’ I thought. ‘Angie is super gay.’ And was I right? Oh, I was so right.

Now if you’re expecting BioWare levels of romance then I’m going to have to tell you to hold your horses, because you’re just going to be disappointed. But that doesn’t mean Angie – nor Robert, if you’re wondering about your other romance option – isn’t worth pursuing. In fact, their interactions with Meredith are some of the most dynamic points in a game that very much embraces the mundane.

I won’t spoil much more about Lake and Angie’s romance, but if you’re looking for something out there to tell you that you can indeed be gay as hell, then here it is.
