New Nintendo Switch to release before Christmas this year
Rumours and hints of a more efficient, bigger model of a Nintendo Switch have been around since last year thanks to a Bloomberg report from August, 2020. However, there was no real confirmation – outside that this ‘pro’ version of the Nintendo Switch would be releasing sometime in 2021.
However, new reports state from Bloomberg state that the new Switch – which has yet to be officially announced – will have a 7-inch OLED screen. The screen size of the current Nintendo Switch is 6.2-inches and the screen is LCD, which isn’t as good as OLED’s ability to offer higher contrast and less battery consumption. More importantly, OLED screens are a lot more durable, meaning there’s a higher chance that an accidental drop won’t lead to a severely cracked screen.
It’s also said that this new Switch will offer 4K resolution, but only to players who are using the Switch in docked mode. This is a big change from the 1080 cap that the original Switch has, but again, is really only a change that you can be part of if you’ve got a 4K TV.
Frankly, we feel that the original Nintendo Switch still has a lot of life to it and that players shouldn’t feel the rush to grab this new Switch at launch.
Which, speaking of, might be sooner than you think. According to the Bloomberg report, work on the new OLED screens will occur in June, then the displays will be shipped to “assemblers around July”. If this is accurate, we can expect to see a new Nintendo Switch sometime before Christmas.
And who knows? Maybe with a new Switch on the way, the dream of certain games coming to the Switch will turn into reality…
