Can you be gay in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

If there’s one thing that you should know about romance in Dragon’s Dogma 2 it’s this: it isn’t that deep. If you’re expecting a whirlwind romance between you and your favourite NPC, we’re sad to say that you’ll have more moments with your oxcart driver than your potential paramours. However, one important question remains: can you be gay in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

That question isn’t so easy to answer. As stated already, the romance in Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t exactly the greatest, and in many ways, it feels like a downgrade from the previous game. While there are a handful of unique characters that stand out among the crowd like Ulrika and Captain Brant, there’s very few who are as compelling as the previous game’s Mercedes, Reynard or even Selene.

A lot of the characters you’ll find yourself surrounded by throughout your journey is, in fact, your Pawns. As an Arisen, you can take command of Pawns, near-emotionless beings that live to serve the Arisen as servants both in and outside of combat.

As far as we’re aware, you’re unable to romance your Pawns. Probably for the best, as they are literally designed to go through with whatever you demand of them. Unless they have Dragonsplague, then the last thing you’ll want is to be smooching someone who wants to rip your head from your shoulders and bathe in your entrails.

But that doesn’t really answer the question asked: can you be gay in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and if so, how far does the game let you take it?

Can you be gay in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

You can play Dragon’s Dogma 2 as a gay character, however there are only two ‘love interests’ that get the 5-star treatment of a meaningful cutscene. These characters are Ulrika, who you’ll meet in Melve, and Wilhelmina, who you meet in Vernworth at the Rose Chateau. That said, there is no real difference whether you play as a male or female Arisen, as these romantic scenes with Wilhelmina and Ulrika happen regardless of your gender.

They also don’t really matter. Players are able to speak to Ulrika and Wilhelmina after they’ve completed their romance scenes, but anything outside of a few letters and unique dialogue, nothing about the romance significantly changes the story in any way. In fact, you could throw flowers at any and every NPC you’d meet, and it would still be considered a viable romance in the eyes of the game.

In the prequel, your love interest gets captured by the dragon and there’s an epic showdown that ends with you saving your love in the end. In Dragon’s Dogma 2, the height of drama is them showing up at your house and possibly scrapping with someone else depending on how many gals and guys you’ve been chatting up throughout your journey.

You are able to throw yourself at the sex workers in the Rose Chateau brothel for a steep sum, and there does seem to be a range of beastren and humans, all of differen shapes, sizes and gender. But, again, none of this has a significant impact on anything you do.
