Game Devs of Color Expo returns for ninth annual event
On February 22, Game Devs of Color Expo announced that the event will return for its ninth year from September 18-21, 2024. The showcase will return to an online format and attendees will be able to check out panels, talks, and interviews via the Swapcard platform.
“In our ninth year, we are joyful to continue highlighting some of the best voices in the gaming industry,” said Catt Small, co-organizer of Game Devs of Color Expo, in a press release. “Our event is fully centered around creators of color without being a diversity zoo.”
“We continue to focus on the thought and creativity that our community puts into making their unique games. As a speaker at GDoCExpo, you won’t need to reveal traumatic experiences for others to consume. We want to hear what you love about making games — what inspires you, and how you build your work. Non-technical and technical talks are all welcome.”
This year’s Game Devs of Color Expo is now accepting submissions for panels, speakers, and game demos. Speakers for the show are paid, and there aren’t any submission or exhibition fees for developers that are chosen to participate. Speakers and developers that are selected will also automatically be entered into consideration for one of GDoC Expo’s grants.
Every year, Game Devs of Color Expo awards participants up to $25,000 per recipient in no-strings-attached grants. Since 2019, they have given out a total of $390,000 in grants to game developers of color.
Beyond the GDoC Expo, this organization also hosts indie game showcases each year to highlight games from developers of color. These indie game directs tend to happen a bit after the GDoC Expo, and show off dozens of indie games from participants.
