Baldur’s Gate 3: How to respec and change class in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally here, and already players are thinking up new and exciting ways to play their characters the way they want to — which means asking questions such as ‘should I change my class?’ and ‘is it possible to actually respec X and Y character into this instead of this?’

Considering this is indeed a game from Larian Studios, the answer is, of course, hell yeah.

Much like how you’re able to when you’re playing Dungeons and Dragons, Baldur’s Gate 3 does allow you to change your class and, if you’re so inclined, to multi-class too. This can be done with not just a custom character, but your companions (Lae’zel, Shadowheart, etc) as well. But that still doesn’t answer the question: how do you do all these things?

One word: Withers.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Respec and Class Change Guide: Who is Withers?

Withers is your average dead guy: skeletal, full of riddles, and a big fan of the word ‘thou.’ Players can encounter him fairly early if they choose to explore the Dank Crypt (just north of where you first crash after you finish Baldur’s Gate 3’s starting area) straight away. But, if you’d rather just wait, players will discover Withers after having a long rest at camp a few times.

If you’re expecting him to reveal who he is, don’t bother. Withers is just here to help you out, and for that, we should be grateful. When you talk to him the first time — whether that’s in his crypt or at your campsite — he’ll ask players about the significance of life (big fan of Shakespeare, this Withers) but afterward will pretty much tell you that he can perform various services for you – such as giving you the ability to respec and change your class. Withers can also help you recruit hirelings.

Once you’ve finished your introduction with Withers, you’ll be given the option to change your class for 100 gold. Considering this is the early game, that can be a bit more than what you’re comfortable giving, so make sure you know what class you want to change into and why in the early stages of Baldur’s Gate 3. During the later stages though? Pocket change!

After you’ve paid, you’ll be taken to the character creator screen where you’ll be able to assign your character a different class and respec their attribute points. It should be noted that, while this is indeed the character creator screen, you won’t be able to change how your characters look and, as far as we’re aware, it’s impossible to change how you look after you start the game.
