Can you be gay in OXENFREE II: Lost Signals?

The highly anticipated sequel to Night School Studio’s spooky mystery game OXENFREE, OXENFREE II: Lost Signals, is now out in the wild for players to check out for themselves on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Though there are some familiar faces in this game, you do follow two new characters and experience a different story about Camena and Edwards Island than the first time around.

Relationships were a key part of the original OXENFREE, so it’s not a stretch to wonder how they’ll impact the sequel. And, of course, there’s the ever-important question of whether or not you can be gay in OXENFREE II.

Can you be gay in OXENFREE II: Lost Signals?

Unfortunately, you can’t be gay in OXENFREE II, or really pursue any romantic relationships at all, actually. Through ghostly, radio signal weirdness we do get glimpses of Riley’s past romantic life, but the gender of the other person is never revealed, and the relationship seems to have ended a while ago. Beyond that, there’s another indication that Riley has been with a man at some point in the recent past, but we won’t elaborate further to avoid spoilers.

The vibes between Riley and her companion throughout the game, Jacob, are also strictly platonic. At one point if the two of you have been getting along, he even specifically asks Riley if she wants to be friends only, no other hidden strings.

Like the first game, there are also teens running around getting up to mischief, but you aren’t able to play matchmaker between them this time. Instead, they’re more focused on the otherworldly happenings of the night.

OXENFREE II: Lost Signals isn’t a great pick if you’re looking for a queer love story, but it is an excellent and spooky little adventure about what adulthood really means.
