Amarantus will release on June 27

On Sunday evening, developer/publisher ub4q announced that after 10 years of development, its visual novel Amarantus will release on June 27, 2023.

“After ten years in the works, we’re proud to announce: our visual novel Amarantus is out JUNE 27 2023,” one of the narrative developers tweeted. “Roadtrip across the country. Confront a tyrant. The revolution will be messy—the relationships will be messier. You won’t make it through this alone.”

Amarantus follows a young man named Arik who has heard that someone needs to do something about the tyrant ruling his country all his life. When his home is destroyed and his parents captured, Arik realizes that maybe that someone needs to be him. He resolves himself to take a road trip across the country to reach the country’s capital and knock the Lord off his throne.

To do this, Arik will need help. Along the way, old friends and new allies will come together to help Arik, though relationships are arguably more messy in this game than the revolution. Arik is a fully realized protagonist with his own personality, but he is guided by your choices and responds to them. Depending on your guidance, he may win friends, create enemies, find new love, or break hearts. According to the Steam page, “romance is not guaranteed: messiness is.”

The characters in this game will also react to Arik, as will the UI. If you announce a brilliant plan, for instance, you may see one of your companions rolling their eyes. When you learn how to pronounce someone’s name, the UI will permanently update to reflect that information. You can have an early-game hookup that you’ll have to deal with for the rest of the story, or nickname your lover after something silly they said.

To check out this story a decade in the making, keep an eye out for Amarantus, coming to PC on June 27.
