Red from Angry Birds is a surprising, but canonical gay ally
If someone had told us that Red, one of the major characters in Rovio’s Angry Birds franchise, might have just proven himself a gay ally, we’d have been very skeptical.
Angry Birds first came onto the gaming scene in 2009, with Rovio daring to ask the question: what would you get if you combined steamed birds that you could chuck at things, all to protect and save their eggs? Well, that would be Angry Birds, and it quickly propelled into being one of the most popular mobile games in the world soon after its launch.
With popularity comes spin-offs, and even movies and TV shows. No wonder Red and the rest of the Angry Birds cast has become high-quality meme material over the past couple of years.
But as it so happens, Red isn’t just a popular character in the Angry Birds franchise. He also is a bird (man? A bird-man?) of taste.
In a recent TikTok from the official Angry Birds account, Red sits down to play ‘Smash or Pass’ with various gaming characters. Incidentally, many of these characters are featured in Smash Bros, though we’ll be honest and say we’re not sure if that makes the video funnier or not.
The angry bird, donning a gaming headset and mic, looks at each video game character featured and tells the audience whether he’ll have sex with them or not. Some of the answers will surprise you. For example, Red would absolutely smash Zelda (fair enough) but not Link (okay?). The bird also says a big ‘PASS’ to underage characters, as he should, but most certainly has a thing for Tharja from Fire Emblem and Ezio from Assassin’s Creed. Gosh, don’t we all?
But what has made us stand up a little straighter (pardon the pun) and declare Red an ally is his reason for passing on Overwatch’s Tracer.
One user said, “my boy Red didn’t just pass on Tracer,” to which the Chad bird responded, “she’s for the ladies, what can I say.”
Granted, this is certainly someone having a field day while planning content over at Angry Birds, but that doesn’t mean we won’t declare Red an official ally of the LGBTQ+ community. Cheers Red, you’re a real one.
In other semi-related news, Angry Birds was acquired by Sega this April. Considering Red’s god-like taste and allyship, we would say that is money well-spent.
