New Barbie movie posters and trailer drop
On Tuesday, Warner Bros. dropped a set of new movie posters and a new trailer for the upcoming Barbie movie from director Greta Gerwig online, to much speculation and celebration from fans.
“WELCOME TO BARBIE LAND, did you bring your rollerblades?🌟,” the trailer tweet reads. “@BarbieTheMovie only in theaters July 21.”
The movie poster reveals were separated into threads: Barbies/Kens, more Barbies/Kens and other dolls that aren’t Barbies/Kens, and humans. These posters serve to introduce fans to all of the characters and famous actors they can expect to see in the film. We already knew that Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling would be starring as the classic Ken and Barbie, but there are plenty of other models and careers, which means there are plenty of other dolls. Some of these include Dua Lipa as a mermaid Barbie, Issa Rae as a president Barbie, Alexandra Shipp as an author Barbie, and Kate McKinnon as a Barbie who’s always in the splits. The cast of Kens — who are all simply Ken — consists of Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Scott Evans. Michael Cera will play Ken’s bestie Alan, while Emerald Fennell will play Barbie’s pregnant pal, Midge.
Things start to get really weird when you take the “human” cast into consideration, though. Helen Mirren will be narrating this strange toy tale, while America Ferrera and Ariana Greenblatt are described only as being “human.” Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, and Jaime Demetriou all appear to be corporate businessmen of some kind, though their titles are limited to “mother,” “intern,” and “suit,” respectively. This makes it clear that the world of the film draws a distinct line between the dolls and regular humans, and hints that there will be some kind of conflict between them and the human suits.
The new trailer further reinforces this, showing the Barbies and Kens (and Alan and Midge) living their lives in Barbie Land, which looks like a pastiche of every classic playset Mattel has ever put out for them. Towards the end of the trailer, we see Robbie and Gosling heading towards “RealWorld,” presumably where they will meet Ferell and the other humans.
