Failbetter Games announces Mask of the Rose release date
On Monday, Failbetter Games announced an official release date for its upcoming romance/murder mystery game set in the Fallen London universe, Mask of the Rose. The game will launch on June 8, 2023.
According to Failbetter Games, Fallen London is “a darkly hilarious gothic underworld where death is a temporary inconvenience, the rats talk, and Hell is only a stone’s throw away.” Because of a mysterious bargain, Victorian London is now in a giant, subterranean cavern, with Parliament sunken into the Thames and the sun never shining.
Since death in this universe is only “a temporary inconvenience,” Mask of the Rose follows the case of first murder victim in London since the Fall, who is now feeling much better after the attempt on their life. Unfortunately, the last person who cared for them — a doctor who also happens to be the player character’s roommate — is now the prime suspect for the crime.
To help get to the bottom of all this, the player character will interact with the world and characters of Fallen London, who will respond differently depending on who your character is and how they dress. Your roommate, Griz, has gotten you a job as a census taker for the city’s new Masters, so you get to interact with folks around town and pursue further platonic or romantic relationships with them based on what you find out. Depending on what you wear while you’re out and about, you will be able to access different story routes and opportunities.
To sort through both murder theories and potential matchmaking marks in the game, players will use a “story-crafting” mini-game. If you don’t like the way the tale is currently unraveling, or if the twists aren’t to your tastes, you can change the motive, location, and/or victim to see how that changes the story.
