The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey reveals fluid gender identity
In an interview with the New York Times published on Wednesday, Bella Ramsey — who previously starred in Game of Thrones and is now playing Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us — revealed that they feel their gender identity is fluid.
“I guess my gender has always been very fluid,” the young actor told the New York Times. “Someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I wouldn’t think about it, but I knew that if someone called me ‘he’ it was a bit exciting.”
According to the article, Ramsey will now select non-binary options on forms, when available. The 19 year-old simply isn’t concerned with what pronouns people use to address her.
“I’m very much just a person,” Ramsey told NYT. “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
Ramsey has been working in acting since she was 11, starting with their role as the young Lady Lyanna Mormont in HBO’s Game of Thrones live-action series. Ramsey landed this role thanks to their time in the Television Workshop in Nottingham, England. Her efforts there got her foot in the door for a Game of Thrones audition, which she obviously landed. Lyanna Mormont became a fan favorite amongst the fantasy show’s huge cast when she joined the show during its sixth season. Ramsey also starred in in 2022 film Catherine Called Birdy alongside Joe Alwyn, and received a Critics Choice Award nomination for best young actor/actress for their performance.
The HBO The Last of Us series will premiere on Sunday, January 15. Fans will get to experience the zombie-laden world through a broader lens, as the show appears to be expanding on side stories and characters — like Bill and his partner Frank, for example.
