The Sims 5 is officially in development under the name ‘Project Rene’
During Tuesday’s Behind The Sims Summit, EA and Maxis celebrated 22 years of the life-simulation franchise by showing what’s coming next for the series – including that what most would consider to be The Sims 5, currently dubbed “Project Rene,” is in development.
According to the developers, they chose this name for the next generation of The Sims “to be reminiscent of words like renewal, renaissance and rebirth to represent the developer’s renewed commitment for The Sims’ bright future.” This new entry in the franchise will reimagine it with new ways to play, tools to encourage creativity, and more ability to
“From the start, The Sims defined life simulation games and has continued to grow into an incredible platform for creativity and self expression,” said Lyndsay Pearson, Vice President of Franchise Creative for The Sims. “Today marks the start of our journey over the next few years as we work on this next game and creative platform, currently titled Project Rene. We are building on the same foundation that has made The Sims compelling for generations of players and pushing the boundaries to create new experiences.

Maxis also used the Summit to announce that starting today, the base version of The Sims 4 will be free to all new players on PC via the EA app or Origin, Mac via Origin, Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. Players of The Sims 4, The Sims FreePlay, and The Sims Mobile now also have access to special free celebration rewards, including tattoos for your Sims and a Plumbob Ceiling Fan.
