Doctor Who finale leaves Yaz and Doctor fans reeling
Doctor Who has always had a way of ripping the hearts out of viewers each and every time a regeneration arc is on the way, especially during the finale. The Power of the Doctor, Jodie Whittaker’s very last episode as the Thirteenth Doctor, proved no different.
But fans of Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Doctor’s ill-fated romance (dubbed ‘Thasmin’ by shippers) were left feeling cold as the episode ended.
The ‘will-they-won’t-they’ pull of Yaz and The Doctor’s relationship has had fans of the couple on tenterhooks for the three years Whittaker has been involved in the role. There had always been hints that Yaz felt attraction for The Doctor even at the beginning of Thirteen’s season, and it was confirmed earlier this year that those feelings had blossomed into love.
Fans were hopeful that the relationship between Yaz and The Doctor would get some much-needed closure during The Power of the Doctor. Some believed they did, while others have felt that they were shorted of an actual love confession between the two women before the Thirteenth Doctor regenerated. All in all, fans of the relationship are feeling pretty conflicted.
One gripe that seems to ring true for the majority of fans is Yaz’s lack of closure. Not only is she one of the few companions that has been confirmed as queer, but her love for The Doctor has pushed Yaz to the limits. She piloted the TARDIS, saves The Doctor’s life, and waits for her to come back. With all this in mind, Yaz leaving The Doctor behind due to her regeneration left some fans feeling as though it didn’t make sense for her character.
Fans were also upset that the Thirteenth Doctor and Yaz didn’t receive the same romantic treatment afforded to previous iterations, such as the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler, as well as the all-encompassing relationship between the Time Lord and River Song. There’s been plenty of romance between The Doctor and his companions in the past, and while none of it has ever ended up happy, some felt the queer romance was treated differently.
Outside of the relationship between Yaz and The Doctor, the Doctor Who finale reintroduced David Tennant as the next Doctor after 10 years. He’ll be joined by Catherine Tate and the actual next Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.
The Power of the Doctor is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
