Drag Race UK’s Dakota Schiffer is repping Pokémon

During the second episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 4, trans femme contestant Dakota Schiffer took a Pokémon inspired look to the runway for the Neon Nights category. Schiffer wore a neon yellow/green number that was inspired by Elsea, the electric-type gym leader from Pokémon Black and White 2.

“I am giving you Pokémon gym leader realness,” Schiffer said in her voiceover for the runway, “mixed with a little bit of Balenciaga.”

“Neon is not a colour palette Dakota Schiffer usually works in, but I also really wanted to bring my love of video games, and I thought this was the perfect category to do so,” she also said.

Fans loved the look – there’s fanart popping up all over Twitter – but they weren’t the only ones. The look even seemingly caught the attention of the official Pokémon Twitter account as well. After the episode aired on Thursday, the account posted artwork of Elesea with a Zebstrika by her side. The Rupaul’s Drag Race UK account clocked the shoutout, responding with a winking face and “okay” symbol emojis.

Dakota Schiffer is the first-ever transgender contestant on the UK version of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It’s a position in the show’s history she takes seriously.

“It certainly was such a privilege to be able to represent my community. Because I know, at least in the UK specifically, it’s a really difficult time and climate to be trans right now,” Schiffer told Attitude. “And to be given the opportunity to represent for my community and be a positive representation for my community I was so overwhelmed to be given the opportunity.”
