Overwatch 2 won’t have a third beta before release
On Thursday, Overwatch Commercial Leader & VP at Blizzard Jon Spector tweeted confirmation that Overwatch 2 will not have a third public beta testing period prior to its release on October 4. These public betas have been Blizzard’s way of gathering player feedback ahead of the sequel’s launch.
Overwatch 2 has previously had one closed alpha and two public beta testing periods, one in April for the PvP mode, and another in July that added a new character and map to what players had seen in the prior one. With this beta cadence, many fans expected there to be one more round of testing before the game’s early October release date, but Spector has officially but those speculations to rest.
“Today marks just 2 months until Overwatch 2’s launch! We know players are eager to dive in and have seen questions about the possibility of a third public Beta,” Spector wrote on Twitter. “While we will continue testing OW2 daily internally, we’re not planning any additional public Beta tests. With all the valuable feedback we received from our alpha and 2 public beta tests, we will be focusing our efforts on launching the best game possible on Oct. 4.”
This was a somewhat surprising revelation, since it means Overwatch 2 will release its launch version without any player feedback about the new support hero and new map that are slated to go live alongside it. The upcoming hero after Sojourn is set to be another healer of some kind, which is a class that’s often been hard to balance in Overwatch’s history (Mercy is still giving the developers trouble). It seems odd that the team wouldn’t want one more window for players to mess around with the new hero and map before they go live in the final product, but it seems they’re satisfied with the data they’ve gathered so far.
