Janelle Monáe will star in GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY
Rian Johnson’s hit murder mystery film, KNIVES OUT is getting a sequel called GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY that will debut in select theaters on an unannounced date and on Netflix December 23. Alongside the star of the previous film, Daniel Craig, queer icon Janelle Monáe will also be appearing in this follow up.
The cast of GLASS ONION is pretty heavily star-studded even outside of Craig and Monáe. Other big names who appear in the film include Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, and Kate Hudson. Protagonist detective Benoit Blanc finds himself on a Greek island having to solve another murder after a tech billionaire (Norton) invites his closest friends there for a getaway, only to have someone turn up dead during the vacation.
The film looks as though it will have the same level of intrigue, camp, and bombast that made its predecessor such a hit. According to Rian Johnson, its Blanc’s character, in part, that inspired the name of the movie, taken from a Beatles song of the same name.
“I’m always fishing for something fun that Blanc can grab onto as an overwrought metaphor that he can beat to death,” Johnson said in a Netflix interview. “This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that’s clear. I’ll be very honest. I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word ‘glass.’ There’s got to be some good glass songs. I was like, ‘Oh, is it a glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?’ The first thing that came up, because I’m a huge Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion.'”
Currently, the theatrical release date and which theaters GLASS ONION will show in are unannounced, but the film will arrive on Netflix’s streaming service on December 23.
