First Kill cancelled by Netflix after one season
Lesbian vampire drama First Kill has been cancelled after just one season, despite the show’s popularity among the LGBTQ+ community.
First Kill is based off a short horror story from writer V.E Schwab, and follows a story that’s somewhat similar to William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It’s warring families are made up of vampires and hunters, and both family units are eager to put the other in the ground. However, after two teenage girls Calliope (Imani Lewis) from the Hunters side, and Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) from the Vampires, fall for one another, things start to get tricky.
On its first few weeks week of release in June, First Kill earned over 48.8 million views, securing a place in the top spot of Netflix’s charts.
However, it seems that the hype wasn’t enough for the streaming giant, as according to Variety, the decision came down to “a matter of viewing numbers versus cost”. Unfortunately, the show did not meet these expectations, and is why First Kill Season 2 is no longer a possibility on Netflix.
Despite the lukewarm reception from critics – scoring 58% on Rotten Tomatoes – it did earn itself a cult following from audiences, with their reviews scoring a much higher 89%. With such a following at its back, it’s no surprise that LGBTQ+ audiences, particularly those who looked forward to a sapphic teen drama, aren’t pleased with First Kill being cancelled. Some havetaken to social media to protest the cancellation, while others have pointed out the overwhelming number of queer shows that were cancelled this year.
Others mentioned that the cancellation of First Kill only further proved that Netflix wasn’t the streaming service for them.
“This is why I stopped subscribing to Netflix. This happens a lot. I can’t get interested in new shows because I know they will be either canceled in 2 seasons or left unfinished.” Twitter user Craig___here commented. “Watching a showing to discover it has no conclusion is insanely infuriating.”
First Kill is available to watch now on Netflix.
