Sigh of the Abyss is a diverse, dark fantasy visual novel coming in 2023

Sigh of the Abyss from Rascal Devworks is a dark fantasy visual novel set in the Mediterranean coming out sometime in 2023. It features hand-painted art and multiple LGBTQ+ romance options. A prologue chapter called Sigh of the Abyss: Shadow Bonds is currently available to give players a taste of this world and story.

Said story follows a young woman who though human in appearance, is inwardly monstrous as the product of a bloody ritual. She finds herself in a Mediterranean city that is more powder keg than metropolis. Wealth disparity is abundant, apparent, and causing more and more tension. The city itself is expanding faster than can be kept up with. And the guards are building up a stockpile of weapons, only making the situation more tense. This story has branching paths, skill checks, and choices whose consequences “will be felt by the city and its inhabitants.” There are multiple endings to play through to see how all those choices can play out.

Players will be able to customize the protagonist’s unnatural abilities from the Abyss in an RPG fashion to let them handle situations with different traits and powers. There are also four humors that influence your character’s reactions: melancholic, sanguine, phlegmatic, or choleric. Using these reactions will allow you to build relationships with the different characters you encounter. There are options for friendship, rivalry, and romance among the NPCs you’ll meet. These characters include an asexual woman, a bisexual woman, and two bisexual men.

Sigh of the Abyss currently doesn’t have a set release date, but is planned to come out sometime next year. Players can wishlist it and play the Sigh of the Abyss: Shadow Bonds demo now.

  • Why do games with beautiful art always have to be dark? I mean, can’t we have a VN that looks like this one but without doom and gloom?
