Hunted is the next Apex Legends season
On Monday, Respawn revealed that the next season of Apex Legends is called Hunted and will kick off on August 9. The update will be available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, PC, and Nintendo Switch. It will also debut the game’s next playable Legend, Vantage, voiced by Natalie Cañizares.
More about Vantage was revealed in the latest Stories from the Outlands cinematic. Her given name is Xiomara (Mara) Contreras, and she and her mother live on the icy planet of Págos. Mara was born here; her mother was a wrongfully convicted criminal and had to deliver her child alone on this barren world. Her mother taught her that everything wants to kill her and that her only prerogative is to survive. Thanks to these teachings, Mara is a skilled survivalist and excellent with a scoped rifle.
While out exploring, Mara discovers the ruins of a crashed ship called the GDS Vantage. Her mother tells her that it was a cargo ship piloted by an AI and that it’s too dangerous to explore further. Obviously, Mara ignores that and returns to the crash site to check out what’s there. While talking to a bat she finds, the ship scans Mara’s face and identifies her as her mother. This reveals her mother’s criminal past, which Mara was previously unaware of.
The ship attacks Mara, trying to put her into her mother’s cell. She manages to save herself and the little bat, only for the two of them to fall out of the ship and off a cliff. Mara is mortally wounded and the bat brings her mother to help. Since she can’t save Mara, her mother sets off a distress beacon alerting her previous captors to where she is so that Mara can get better medical care. Presumably, this is how Vantage both gets her call sign and joins the Apex Games.
In another cute piece of lore, the Apex Legends Twitter account also posted an appeal letter Vantage wrote to the Apex Games demanding that Echo be allowed to join the competition with her, despite an incident where the bat apparently bit another person who was trying out for the Games. She cites that Bloodhound is allowed to have a raven that bullies Pathfinder, so her mostly-friendly bat companion should be allowed to enter as well.
A launch trailer for Apex Legends: Hunted will premiere on July 28, ahead of the season’s launch on August 9.
