Streamer Spotlight

Streamer Spotlight: DragTrashly

Welcome to a new Streamer Spotlight! This time around the spotlight falls on DragTrashly, uTure contestant and an award-winning Drag Queen gaymer!

DragTrashly is a US-based comedian/model and is also a Twitch partner. They are also part of the Stream Queens, and are a Dead by Daylight Fog Whisperer. Now that’s one hell of a list of accolades!

We got to chat with Trashly about streaming, what they do when they aren’t entertaining their followers, and their experience with the new Youtube show, uTure!

When and why did you start streaming?

I wanted to start doing drag, but since I work full time during the week, it was difficult to get opportunities to perform at bars and clubs since shows on the weekends are usually reserved for more experienced performers.

One day I saw a video on YouTube of the legendary Miss Coco Peru playing GTA V and it clicked with me that doing drag and playing video games (which I already spent a lot of time doing) was not only possible, but could be very entertaining. So I started streaming myself in drag playing video games.

What games do you prefer to stream?

Dead by Daylight is the game I stream the most! I love playing it and people love to watch me play. I also really enjoy streaming The Sims and heavy story-based games like Detroit: Become Human and more recently The Quarry.

What do you do outside of streaming?

I’m a full-time Software Engineer. When I’m not working or streaming, I love to eat, watch tv, play board games, and spend time with friends and family.

Can you tell us more about uTure and how you decided that you wanted to be part of it?

I’ve always wanted to be part of a reality show, like RuPaul’s Drag Race, but that show is more for drag artists who perform live and in person, and while I do that occasionally, uTure show seemed like a great opportunity and fit for my journey as a drag content creator.

What have you learned about yourself through streaming?

I’ve learned that I want to do this full-time. I’ve also learned to love myself more, which sounds cheesy, but when you have an incredibly supportive community who love you, it makes it easy to see yourself through them.

How has being part of the competition with uTure affected you?

It’s been a lot of fun and I really enjoy and appreciate the production team and other contestants. I’ve never been a part of something like this and I’m very excited! It’s very time consuming though, my weekends are basically gone! The challenges mean I have to create a lot of content outside of keeping my regular live streaming schedule.

How do you find being an out LGBTQ+ streamer?

It can difficult being an LGBTQ+ content creator in the mainstream gaming world. I get so disheartened because I like to believe that we, as a society, have progressed so much. But then I’ll get trolls in my stream saying abhorrent things or I read the uTure Show live chat when I was introduced as a contestant, before any of my content was shown. It would be nice to be judged as an entertainer and not immediately get ‘L’ spammed at me for simply existing. I have to constantly remind myself that those trolls are just an ugly, loud minority and that I have an amazing community who loves me.

What are you most proud of since you started streaming?

I was featured in Vogue! That’s something I never thought would happen. I’ve also been featured on some pretty big channels in the gaming industry like Xbox, Riot Games, and Dead by Daylight (of which I’m a Fog Whisperer and that’s another thing I’m extremely proud of). I get teary-eyed every time drag is featured in a mainstream gaming space.

What’s the game that defined your childhood?

The Sims was the first game I played where I could play as a gay character and that gave me hope that I could live in a future where I didn’t have to pretend I was straight. I’d be lying if I didn’t say my life as a kid revolved around Pokémon though.

Do comedy and gaming often interlink for you?

I’m an entertainer at heart so I want my streams to be enjoyable and humorous. I primarily stream myself playing games, and I find that by doing that, it naturally brings out those qualities in me.

Where does the name DragTrashly come from?

My drag name, Hashtag Trashly, came from this brave drunk girl with unwarranted confidence named Ashley. She was everything I want to be as a drag queen; bold, beautiful, and drunk. I made dragtrashly as a handle because I liked how it sounded and it has drag in the name, so you know what you’re getting when you watch me.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

Twitch Con! I can’t wait to meet and hang out with my community and streamer friends.

If you won the uTure competition – how would this affect your future?

I’d have more time to stream and produce content as it would allow me to become a full-time drag content creator, which is my dream.
