Gotta Snatch ‘Em All is a brand new podcast that delves into exploring and understanding why the queer community has such a prominent and longstanding love for the Pokémon franchise.
In each episode, Alex the host talks with notable queer Pokémon fans about the history of their love affair with Pokémon and why they think it holds such significance for queer people.
When asked what inspired him to start the podcast, Alex said: “I joked with Crystal Methyd in our interview that I basically had two closeted experiences, one being my sexuality and the second being my obsessive fandom with Pokémon.”
“Growing up, I never had a community of friends with whom I could play the Pokémon games, nor did I ever really know where I could find or make friends who also shared his interest until much later into my 20s, when I discovered platforms like Reddit. On these platforms I noticed that there seems to be a huge queer following of Pokémon, which begs the question, what is it about Pokémon that queer people in particular identify with so much?”
“Is it the notion of evolution – shedding an old skin to become someone or something more realised and future-proof? Is it how you can construct a new identity or character for yourself and essentially acquire and raise a new chosen family in these cute collectable creatures? Or is it that the battling aspect is essentially sports which doesn’t involve the risk of being picked last like the trauma of school sports?”
Guests so far have included stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Crystal Methyd and Sum Ting Wong, as well as Nova, who is one half of the awesome drag couple Novympia and also a good friend of Gayming Magazine.
When asked about potential future dream guests, Alex says that he achieved one of his dream guests very early on when Crystal joined the show, “But I know that a lot of the other queens like Trixie, Nicky Doll and Jaida are fans, so I would love to interview them and learn about their perspectives and experiences as lifelong fans of the franchise.”
