The Sky Left Us is a queer visual novel about climate change and classism
Queer indie games have always challenged us by introducing new, thought-provoking themes and and narratives, and The Sky Left Us by Ratworm Games is no different.
The Sky Left Us is a queer, visual novel that tackles climate change, classism, and how our relationships shape our politics. Sounds pretty raw if you ask us, which may just be the thing you’re looking for in the day and age where classism and lack of support over climate change still runs rampant, and does indeed affect our relationships.
Players will take on the role of the non-binary protagonist, Spire. Spire is an off-worlder scientist who comes to the Planet Zé in order to find a way to save a mountain – only to get caught up in a drama that spans across a three caste system, and the citizens that fall in and out of those guidelines.
On Planet Zé, the atmosphere is semi-toxic, and three caste’s have been formed – drawn across tiers of air quality. The first is the Peakborn, who rule, lead, develop and do their best to protect. Then there’s the Sunken, who mine the Miasma in the air, strapped in fog suits, and grow food for the Mountain. Last but not least, there’s the Unmoored – individuals who trade resources and migrate on floating raft-cities.
If the worldbuilding of this game intrigues you, then you’re going to be even more excited at hearing that there are four romance routes, as well as a true route – 2 other additional routes have also been added to the game too, thanks to The Sky Left Us Kickstarter project meeting its two additional stretch goals.
Other features include:
- Original soundtrack featuring Don’t Do It, Neil‘s Mabel Harper.
- A rich sci-fi planet characterized by the climate and its imminent changes.
- Difficult choices and deeply flawed characters.
- Beautiful sprite and background art.
The release date for the game is estimated to be sometime in Summer, 2022. If you can’t wait until then, a demo of the game is available to play on itch.io.
