Kitsune Tails is Super Mario With a Sapphic Twist
Kitsune Games have teamed up with MidBoss, the team behind 2064: Read Only Memories to develop a follow-up to Super Bernie World – a game called Kitsune Tails.
Why you should be interested in this game is simple: it’s got a queer subplot between two ladies, the art style is reminiscent to Super Mario, and it’s releasing on the PS5, PS4, as well as PC and Linux sometime in Q1 2022. A whole year away, we know, but it shows that we’ve got even more queer games to look forward to in the future.
Steeped in classic Japanese mythology, players play the protagonist Yuzu – a half human/half kitsune girl that’s first outing in the world leaves her in danger. Thankfully she is saved by a human girl, Akko, and over time the two form a relationship. The only problem with that, however, is that humans are not regarded highly by the kitsune people – putting Yuzu in an awkward position.
Her relationship with humans finally causes Yuzu’s friend and mentor to snap, causing her to take Akko away and for Yuzu to fight in order to get her love back.
But this platformer isn’t simple by any means. Yuzu will earn special abilities by finding hidden outfits or stealing them from monsters. You can ride a giant boot, become an invincible rainbow fox, and even use an antique samurai spear to scale walls. You’ll also have to fend off unfriendly ghosts with the warm light of paper lanterns in search of secret doors. Doing all this isn’t just for the fun of it though, if you want to get the best ending for Kitsune Tails, you’ll need to retrace Yuzu’s footsteps through earlier areas with newfound powers to find optional story content.
“Secrets are a staple of classic platformers, and we wanted to use that as a vehicle for telling a story of complicated relationships and self discovery,” said Emma ‘Eniko’ Maassen, Kitsune Games founder. “Only by using all of the skills imbued by Yuzu’s adorable outfits and other tools she’ll collect on her journey can you really get the whole tale, but Kitsune Tails will have plenty of accessibility options allowing players to define the depth of challenge.”
A Kickstarter campaign for Kitsune Tails will run in mid 2021 ahead of its release on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 as well as Windows PC and Linux via Steam and itch.io in Q1 2022. Players can enjoy Kitsune Tails in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Japanese.
