After a Year of Asking, Dead by Daylight Will Add Colourblind Mode

Dead by Daylight has been steadily improving ever since it first released, but one of the things that it completely lacked was a colourblind mode. This was off-putting for a number of reasons, as icons, status effects and gameplay mechanics like auras and scratch marks would be almost impossible for players with colourblindness to see.

As a fan of Dead by Daylight for a few years now and as someone who often visits the official Reddit, it has become a pleasant, but disappointing sight to see one user – commonly known as the colourblind guy by fans – CommanderBosphorous ask week in and week out for colourblind mode to be added. They had received very little response from the developers over at Behavior Interactive, but now their asking has come to an end.

Unfortunately, the news of colourblind mode being added to Dead by Daylight was mired in controversy. Whilst streaming the game, a developer from Behavior Interactive lashed out about the question of a colourblind mode, stating that “it’s getting really boring just blabbing about colorblind mode all the time, we’ve heard it a million times. We know. Continuing to badger us about it isn’t going to change anything.”

As to be expected, fans were not happy about this and the attitude of this developer was soon picked up by COO of Able Gamers and advocate for helping gamers with a disability, Steven Spohn.

Quickly afterward, Dead by Daylight’s official Twitter account apologized and thanked Spohn for bringing this incident to their attention. In a thread they went on to explain that “this is not indicative of the views of the team” and that while this wasn’t the way they would have liked to announce it, colourblind mode has been worked on by the team for some time now. Given the controversy this decision is now smack bang in the middle of, it seems any goodwill about this has been reduced a significant amount.

On the other hand, it does finally mean colourblind players – myself included! – won’t have to struggle or be left out when they play with their friends.

Here is a work in progress look of the scratch mark gameplay mechanic.

The colourblind mode for Dead by Daylight has yet to be given an official date, but it doesn’t look like it will be appearing in the next update – 4.5.0. When a full date is given out, we’ll be sure to write about it!

In the meantime, check out the other promise that Behavior Interactive has made – the addition of queer characters within Dead by Daylight!
