CD Projekt Red Boss says Cyberpunk 2077 crunch ‘is not that bad’

CD Projekt Red had said in the past that there would be no obligation for employees to crunch when working on Cyberpunk 2077. It wouldn’t eliminate crunch by any means, but it would certainly make it less unbearable.

Fast forward a few months later, and head of CD Projekt Red, Adam Badowski stated in an email to employees that they would need to work their usual hours, as well as a day on the weekend. This was revealed due to Jason Schreier, video game reporter for Bloomberg, who went on to explain that this went directly against what CD Projekt Red had promised.

After several delays, the new release date of December 10th has posed the question to many: does this mean there is more crunch on the way? There’s no doubt about it that that answer is yes, but there’s more to it than that. In an investor’s call following Tuesday’s delay announcement, CEO of CD Projekt Red, Adam Kiciński, stated that the crunch happening within the studio is “not that bad—and never was.”

Kiciński acknowledged that crunch within the studio had been “picked up by the media” and that some of the studio had been crunching heavily, “but a large part of the team is not crunching at all since they have finished their work.”

As for the workers who are crunching, Kiciński said that they have had feedback from the team, and that “they’re happy about the extra three weeks, so we don’t see any threats regarding crunch.”
