Rose Seed Replica transports lesbian dating to the final frontier

When it comes to ways of finding a girlfriend, “teleporting a woman across the stars” is either incredibly romantic or dramatically desperate. In Rose Seed Replica, it’s up to you to decide which.

The upcoming game, which launches on 9th September, casts players as Sophie, a young woman who finds herself on a space station in the far reaches of the galaxy. Meeting the woman who’s “kind of” responsible for her dislocation, Sophie also realises that she’s “the loveliest person ever”, and soon lesbian sparks are flying.

Rose Seed Replica is the first major release from indie developer LezLiz, a sci-fi inspired, pixel-art hybrid of point-and-click adventure and anime-styled visual novel that is billed as “100% yuri” and “100% gay agenda”. Described by the developer as “a feel-good, positive, inclusive lesbian love story taking place in an isolated space station”, the game is designed by and for queer women.

It’s also a massive creative undertaking. Rose Seed Replica features around 170,000 words of dialogue – which dwarfs most novels – offers six different story paths, and four romance types. While there appear to be some puzzle sections and platforming moments, the majority of the game focuses on interactions with its all-female cast – including a host of cute aliens, strange creatures, and other non-player characters. It’s a game about empathy, communication, and wildly gay flirting – something that, frankly, we need more of in games.
