SWERY plans to change transphobic writing in Deadly Premonition 2
Deadly Premonition 2 released last week to a wide variety of criticism ranging from the poor frame rate, to the overwhelming transphobia. The transphobic writing in Deadly Premonition 2 was odd for fans of SWERY, considering he had been rather supportive of the LGBT+ community in other games like The Missing.
The transphobia in Deadly Premonition 2 centers around a character who constantly gets deadnamed and misgendered, even by the hero of the game, Francis York. What was so off about these scenes was that previously, York had been supportive of trans issues. For York to misgender and deadname the character later on just didn’t sit right.
However, after criticism of this transphobia by fans and friends alike was pointed out to SWERY, he has since posted his own response on Twitter.
“I realized by pointed out from my friends, I might have hurt transgender people in my scenario. It wasn’t intentional. I am really sorry for that.” He continued, “some scenes will be sanity checked by a team that included diversity. And I will rewrite that scene ASAP.”
This isn’t the first time that a creator has reached out to address issues that have affected their LGBT+ players and allies, with BioWare having done so with Mass Effect: Andromeda, but we’re pleasantly surprised all the same. Let’s hope that SWERY keeps to their word, and that with the removal of transphobic writing in Deadly Premonition, players will feel comfortable to play. After the game gets a frame rate patch, of course.
