DC Universe highlights John Constantine bisexuality in ‘Apokolips War’

My introduction to John Constantine started with the 2005 movie starring Keanu Reaves. Although I haven’t followed the workings of the famed warlock, occultist and con-man, I’m happy and surprised to discover that the popular DC character is being highlighted so unapologetic-ally as bisexual. And in the latest animated movie, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, he’s… uh… a scalie.

The moment comes during a scene in an underground fight club currently occupied by the Suicide Squad and other DC villains. Constantine, Superman, Raven and Lois Lane visit the establishment; leading to a confrontation between Harley Quinn and Lane. During the interaction, Constantine finds himself uncomfortable around his ex, who he didn’t expect to see in the fight club.

Raven assumes Constantine is talking about Quinn, but he quickly corrects her and the camera pans to show a grinning King Shark. And then a wink follows. No one is phased by the revelation because, well, everyone is a mutant or superhero/villain, so everyone is free game, right? At least King Shark is half man, half shark?

The internet is currently musing over who is the top and who is the bottom in their ill-fated relationship, leading the movie’s creators and writers to confirm that the implied lovers are canon and real in the DC Universe.

In an interesting note, both John Constantine and King Shark were introduced to the comic book world in the early to mid 90’s. That would mean they were together, in one way or another, during a time when gay rights were starting to push for legalization.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is currently available to stream on Digital HD and debuts on Blu-ray 19 May 2020.
