The Gayming Podcast Episode 9: Love, marriage and tentacles
Episode 9 of The Gayming Podcast has dropped and this one is all about love, marriage, happy couples… and tentacles.
I was back in the hosting chair and I want to give a special shoutout to Matt Kamen for stepping in as guest host for Gayming Magazine’s last episode. Thanks Matt!
Joining me this week was everyone’s favourite trans streamer Miabyte and, making his podcast debut, aspiring video game artist Alex Taylor.
Just before the podcast started, news broke of the Final Fantasy VII Remake demo dropping, so we were especially honoured to be joined by Mia for this one who freely admitted to an urge to get off her train and return home immediately!
What’s in your slot?
In this opening section of our podcast, we talked about what we’ve been playing recently.
I talked about playing Grand Theft Auto V, I called it retro but then a discussion broke out about what is retro, so please decide amongst yourselves whether this is retro or just plain old. Anyway, it got me thinking about how they could easily get some good diversity into GTA 6 without compromising too much on the trademark humour — although there have been some lines crossed, which we all agree have been bad in this series.
Alex talked about playing Overwatch still, and how bored he’s getting. We talked about whether Overwatch 2 will finally feature LGBTQ storylines with its LGBTQ characters, despite them only being confirmed in the companion comics.
Mia has been playing Pokémon Alpha Sapphire again and she talked about the accompanying new Pokémon platforms like Pokémon Bank and Sleep, which I think is a step too far, but then was reminded about how positive Nintendo is on healthy gaming.
Gayming News
Further into the episode, we talked about what we’ve been reading on Gayming Magazine recently.
Mia talked about the new Star Wars High Republic announcement and we all then got to have another Star Wars discussion — it seems this is now a mandatory part of each episode! We talked about how the new setting opens up a whole opportunity and setting for stories for future films, TV, comics, books, and games.
Alex talked about Baldur’s Gate 3 being released and how he’s excited about it coming from the developers of Divinity Original Sin, a game he adored. The game is offering a full DND experience with turn-based battles and everything. Oh and a spaceship with tentacles! Plus, the new romance system is moving away from Bioware’s style and more to a random roll of the dice…and we all know how accurate romance and sex can be a roll of the dice!
I then spoke about the announcement of the new Borderlands 3 DLC, “Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock”. It’s so awesome that a AAA game is featuring a same-sex marriage, and it’s the whole point of the DLC, you can’t avoid it, you can’t play round it, it’s all about the magic of love!
Hot Topic
In this week’s hot topic, we carried on talking about love and LGBTQ couples in video games by discussing our favourite queer couples in games.
My choice was Angus and Gregg from Night in the Woods. They are a quintessential rural gay couple in their twenties. Yes, they realise the dating pool may be small in their small and conservative town. But the bond between them is far from just circumstantial. These two deeply love each other, and always look out for the others’ best interest. Plus, it’s amazing how layered their relationship is. You hear gregg talking about how he doesn’t deserve Angus, because Angus is a really good guy. This is isnt anything new, but it’s not something you see in a lot of in media with queer relationships.
Mia chose Ellie and Riley from The Last of Us, particularly in the DLC “Left Behind” which showed the last day of their relationship and how tragic yet beautiful it is. Plus, the it shows the human spirit of still having fun and loving moments in the face of impending doom.
Alex had a few to talk but his favourite couple was Dorian and himself from Dragon Age Inquisition!
