Unofficial real-life Mario Kart company ordered to pay Nintendo over £350,000

A real-life Mario Kart could seem like a dream or nightmare depending on who you are. After all, it’s either have the time of your life or ending up driving with a banana peel thrown in your face, right? Well, this unofficial Mario Kart company probably feels just as bad as that now that they’ve been ordered to pay a huge sum of money to Nintendo.

As stated in Kotaku’s article, the company – which was formally named Maricar – Mari Mobility has been found “guilty of infringing on Nintendo’s intellectual property.” The company’s previous name was obviously based on the kart game by Nintendo, and Mari Mobility did offer Nintendo-themed costumes, such as dressing up as Mario and Toad, to customers.

It really is no surprise that Nintendo caught a whiff of this, and decided to do something about it. Nintendo was originally rewarded £70,000 (10 million yen) during the lawsuit they filed back in February 2017.

Yet it was a verdict that didn’t satisfy Mari Mobility. They appealed but was ultimately unsuccessful, and in fact, only increased the amount owed to £352,250 (50 million yen).

Where Mari Mobility will go from here remains to be seen, as the company is quite popular with tourists and for them to go completely bankrupt is not something we’d wish on anyone. Still, going against Nintendo? Perhaps not the smartest move, even if you are an unofficial, real-life Mario Kart company…
