That’s Underrated: Oswald and Newton from Vampyr
Vampyr is an underrated game by itself, so you shouldn’t at all be surprised that lovers Oswald and Newton are next on ‘That’s Underrated’, a series that looks at all the less-talked-about relationships in video games.
I’ve been playing a lot of Vampyr lately, and as to be expected with a cast of over 20 characters, there are a lot of relationships to explore. One of my favourite couples was with Cristina, a sex-worker and Mr Darby, a journalist. Getting them together during a time of hardship was very satisfying.
But none beat out Oswald and Newton for me. Oswald Thatcher and Newton Blight are both war veterans, having served together during the war in France. During that time they eventually began to develop feelings for the other, but have hidden it from the rest of the world.
Newton in particular struggles in coming to terms with being gay, which is a point of tension between himself and Oswald. Oswald is unashamed of loving Newton, and while Newton does have real feelings for Oswald, he finds it hard to show it.
It’s a sweet, but tortured relationship when you first meet the both of them and it can end in tragedy depending on how you play the game, aka if you’re an asshole or not. But keeping them alive and happy was my main priority, so you better believe those kids ended up loving one another until the very end.
If you do end up brutally murdering them for their blood, their last words are about the other. It’s poignant and beautiful, and incredibly sad. So don’t do it. Let these men be happy, please.
