Social network post has fans speculating whether SpongeBob is gay

A simple, supportive and inclusive tweet on the official Nickelodeon network profiles has caused quite the stir. In honor of Gay Pride Month, the kids and tweens channel highlighted some of its LGBT+ characters and human content producers. I’m sure they didn’t expect the rumors, conspiracies and theorizing to follow shortly after.

Is SpongeBob SquarePants gay?

At the height of the cartoon’s popularity in the early 2000’s, fans of the show probed the producers for answers in regards to the title character’s sexuality. They answered by saying he is asexual. Because he is a sponge. Literally a sponge with no sexual desires.

What’s shocking to me the most about this is that SpongeBob SquarePants is still on the air with brand new episodes. I haven’t watched the show since high school and thought it would have ended years ago. I can only imagine what adventures SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and Mr. Krabs are finding themselves in during a more progressive time.

SpongeBob has proved so popular that it’s spawned 40 (yes, 40) video games. The most recent titles include SpongeBob SquarePants: Plankton’s Robotic Revenge (2013) and SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated (2020).
