WandaVision just introduced the MCU’s first LGBTQ hero!

Please note, the following contains spoilers for WandaVision.

WandaVision episode three has arrived on Disney+ today and alongside the many loose threads teasing us that all is not what it seems, we were excited to see the potential arrival of the MCU’s first LGBTQ hero!

As watchers of the show will know by now, the sitcom-esque existence that Wanda and Vision occupy is definitely an environment that Wanda is in control of. We saw glimpses of that in episode 2 and it is confirmed in episode 3 that Wanda has control over this environment. We’ve seen her reverse time and also she appears to have ejected Geraldine from the town completely.

This appears to confirm our suspicions that Wanda has created this world as a place to escape to, from what or who, we don’t know at this stage. But the continued presence and references to SWORD, Nick Fury’s SHIELD replacement, show that someone is trying to get her back.

But, for LGBTQ fans, the big reveal came at the end of episode 3 with Wanda apparently giving birth to twins, Tommy and Billy.

While we’re waiting for the show to confirm whether this is part of the illusion or in fact reality, we know from the comics that Wanda and Vision do actually have twins, and William (Billy) grows up to be Wiccan, a member of the Young Avengers who was revealed to have secretly married fellow superhero Hulkling last year.

As we previously reported in a recent Comics Corner, Hulkling and Wiccan weren’t strictly allowed to be gay when they first appeared, despite debuting thirteen years after Northstar was outed as Marvel’s first gay hero. The couple had always been intended to be gay, and were indeed confirmed as dating each other in the original run of Young Avengers. It would take another seven years before they would share their first on-panel kiss though, in the pages of Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #9. Even in the early years of the 21st century, Marvel still seemed to baulk at the idea of showing gay teenagers sharing something as innocent as a kiss.

Fast-forward fifteen years though, and the situation now is greatly improved. Now legally adults in-continuity – a rare case of characters notably ageing in the elastic timescales of superhero comics – their relationship is allowed to be pivotal to a major event storyline. Marvel is also unflinchingly portraying it as a mature, adult pairing that actively embraces not only the characters’ gayness but the queerness of a good segment of the audience.

With WandaVision continuing to fast forward through the ages in the show, we’re excited to see whether we see the twins grow up and what impact that will have on Billy and Tommy.

We will also have to see whether they will transcend this environment to return to the real world, if and when this happens in the show. If they do, then we’re potentially looking at the arrival of the first LGBTQ hero in the MCU and sets up the future development of the universe as being more diverse.

WandaVision  episodes are released every Friday on Disney+.
