Gotham High comic to introduce Chinese-American Bruce Wayne and Gay Alfred

This is going to have Batman fans divided! Late last week, DC Comics announced a new graphic novel titled Gotham High and gave a large preview of the comic to Entertainment Weekly. As with Boom Studios and its Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Power Rangers comics, Gotham High is hitting the reboot button on the 80-year-old superhero story and adapting it to modern society and culture.

Written by Melissa de la Cruz and illustrated by Thomas Pitilli, Gotham High is being described by most sources as Gossip Girl meets the Gotham television show meets Crazy Rich Asians. Inside the upcoming comic book, readers will find a Chinese-American Bruce Wayne, a gay Alfred, a skateboarding Joker and prom queen-like Catwoman. And who knows what other plot-twists and character reboots await readers in the new DC Comic book.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the new graphic novel is summarized as: “After Bruce, a rich Chinese-American loner, gets kicked out of his boarding school, he returns to Gotham City to find his home and former friends are nothing like he left them. Former girl-next-door Selina is now the queen bee of Gotham High, ruling over everyone with a dark side no one knows about, and class clown Jack will do anything to get the last laugh. And when a string of kidnappings seem to target Bruce, he finds himself embroiled in a dangerous love triangle with the very people he suspects are at the center of it.”

Gotham High is available in stores, online and on most e-readers next week, 7 April 2020.
