The Last of Us TV Show writer won’t change Ellie’s sexuality

It was only recently that The Last of Us TV show got confirmed for HBO, but already new, interesting details are being revealed by Vice President of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, and writer and producer for the new show, Craig Mazin.

One of these details was found out due to an interaction on Twitter between a fan and Mazin. Twitter user Barbara (via GameSpot) stated that “y’all better keep the gay gay. Please and thank you. Do not erase that representation please.”

Mazin answer was short and sweet: “You have my word.”

As queer fans of The Last of Us will know, Ellie’s sexuality has been divisive among gamers. During the first game’s DLC, Left Behind, Ellie shares a kiss with her friend, Riley. The reaction to that was incredibly explosive, with some stating that it easily could have been Ellie feeling confused or needing comfort and wanting to share it with someone. Others weren’t so certain, and felt that this brushing aside was just a way to disregard Ellie’s sexuality.

However, with this new game coming out and with Ellie’s new love interest being shown, it hasn’t left much room to speculate that Ellie may ‘actually just be confused’. While it was a laughable take before, it’s good of Naughty Dog to actually kick that theory to the curb where it belongs.

We’re curious on how The Last of Us TV show will embrace Ellie’s sexuality, and when the show will actually take place. Before the events of the second game, maybe? Or will it act as a sequel of some kind? What we do know is that we’re very excited to see how it all plays out.
